On 4 February 2026 the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (Cryptoassets) Regulations 2026 (the Cryptoassets Regulations) were made. The majority of its provisions come into force on 25 October 2027 and will expand the perimeter of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (FSMA 2000) so that firms carrying on specified “cryptoasset regulated activities” in the UK will need Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) authorisation with the correct permissions when the regime commences (expected to be in October 2027). The FCA has responded with a rapid sequence of consultations designed to build a new crypotasset regulatory framework while anchoring expectations in familiar Handbook concepts.
