On 1 January 2025 the Hague Convention on Choice of Court Agreements of 30 June 2005 (the Hague Convention) entered into force in Switzerland. In preparation Switzerland amended the Private International Law Act (PILA) most notably by removing the “specificity” requirement for jurisdiction clauses designating Swiss courts.
As of mid‑2025 the Hague Convention is applied in 37 states including all EU member states (except Denmark) the United Kingdom Mexico Singapore Ukraine Montenegro and the Republic of Moldova. Several other jurisdictions – such as the United States China Israel Costa Rica and Kosovo – have signed but have not yet ratified it.
The Hague Convention’s entry into force in Switzerland is of practical importance for cross-border finance transactions involving Swiss parties or assets.
